Florence is the capital city of the Tuscany region and is one of the country's most important and historic cities. Full of beautiful, Renaissance-style buildings, including wonderful churches and enormous palaces, Florence is steeped in culture and atmosphere, and has not changed greatly since the 16th century.
Standing alongside the banks of the River Arno, Florence lies amongst spreading olive groves and Italian vineyards, and continues to overwhelm tourists by its sheer beauty.
Airports There are two airports in the Tuscany region; Amerigo Vespucci Airport also known as the Peretola Airport located around 4 km / 3 miles to the north-west of Florence; journey time to the city center approximatley 30 minutes, and Galileo Galilei Airport in Pisa; journey time to Florence city center between 60-90 minutes.
Getting around Taxis in Florence are white and are available throughout the city centre at taxi ranks located mostly at the main piazzas. There is a good bus system to move in and around the city. Tickets have to be purchased prior to boarding the buses at local tobacconists, bars or newsstands. A ticket valid for 60 minutes of travel costs €1. The central train station is called Firenze Santa Maria Novella.. The station is located in the northwest corner of central Florence, within convenient walking distance to most Florence tourist attractions.
Climate The weather in Florence in November is fairly mild although there can be heavy rain and occasional icy winds, so be sure to bring warm clothing. November temperatures range from 14°C to 5°C.
Cuisine The food is simple and abundant with local produce, mellow cheeses and grilled meats. A typical Tuscan meal will include white beans, beef stake Florentine, roasted or wine-braised game and Chianti wine.
